Refering To Yourself As An Artist...

Comments

I never consider myself an artist. My art skills suck at the moment. :P

I'm artistic, you're autistic.

lol ur ghey

Don't tell my parents!!!

My drawings are deep and thought provoking works of art.
The last one involved a mutant eating its own foot.
I'm kind of a big deal

I am The Big One.

Indeed. But here's a question, at what point should one be considered an artist?

In my point of view, calling yourself an artist means that you're claiming to consistently create works of art on a regular basis. From there, it depends on what you consider to be art. I like to think of art as communicating a thought, idea, or feeling, and that's not limited to drawing, either. If you were to draw a picture of a beaver, and it wasn't intended to communicate anything, (ignoring the way others interpret it in this case,) it's just a drawing. No matter how good of an artist you may be, I just find it pretentious to refer to yourself as one. It's a gift, because if art is to be interpreted, you need people.
It's also a pretty hefty claim to make.

no no surely i'm an artist i use pencils. i have a woodden man and i put him in poses and make him hold pencils so he's and artist too and i use pencils to draw him

pencils

Pencils are made of wood, too...
Whoa...

Although I can agree with this statement, it seems ironic coming from someone who's associations teeter on skewed epiphany's birthed from alleged "deep reflection", and with that I might add that pessimism does not constitute modesty. If you feel I have the wrong impression please feel free to tell me off in the most condescending way you see fit.

Uh, cry more.

"Artist" is not just normative, it's also a function. I call myself an artist here on ng cause that's what I do here, I (try to) make art.

wow its funny. because i was thinking the same.

about is it ok to call myself "artist"? ^^

"So, Mr Picasso, what do you do for a living?"

"I'm an artist".

"You narcissistic prick."

I completely see where you're coming from, and there's plenty of occasions when people call themselves artists or animators or musicians or managers or facilitators or secretaries and I think it very audacious of them. However, that doesn't rule out the use of the terms ever ever. It took me until about last year to feel completely comfortable calling myself an animator. Even though I'd already animated, I had stuff up on Newgrounds, and I had done commercial work, it wasn't until I moved out of home to the big city and met other people I considered proper animators, received their approval, and became a part of the local animation community that I felt like an animator.
But that doesn't mean I think I'm a good animator. You can be an artist without being an artist of much worth.
When I look at what I do for hours on end every day of my life, the books and the DVDs on my shelves, the scraps of paper on my desk, the people I talk to, the events I go to, my sources of income, the meetings I attend, the emails I'm sent and I send, it's evident that animation isn't just 'something I do' anymore. It's THE thing I do, regardless of how good or bad I may be at it, and if someone says to me "what are you?", The answer is most definitely "an animator". And animation is just my medium; if I'm being less specific I have no qualm calling myself an artist. When it was just something I did in my free time then maybe not, but now free time is when I'm NOT animating.

tl;dr: You don't have to be a good artist to be an artist, it just has to be first and foremost what you do and who you are.

"There is no right or wrong in art, it simply just is, it exists as perspective experience within existence made from the creator's viewpoint or another."

that being said, the label of artist is always perspective. it is somewhat annoying when people submit probably one piece in their life and call themselves artist's. i mean, i'm not one to talk, i've haven't made much in my life, so in terms of this post, i guess you could say i'm not an artist yet, but a rook climbing the ranks to becoming one.

@Red Also that was pretty damn good counter statement.

good post, glad to see some of these responses to a lightly brooded question.

the people have the rigth of call itselgf like he like....and you have the rigth to say is a dumbass. Freedom, is not AWESOME???

I could say I'm a doctor, but that's not true, just annoying.

I hope you don't call yourself one then, because that comic looks like ass.

HEHE

hey im an artist

It's only lame if the person saying it isn't really an artist. If you make art and it's a major focus in your life then you have the right to call yourself an artist

hey im an artist

kids today! :eyeroll:

I took a shit on the sidewalk once and it kind of looked like Danny Devito and everyone thought it was amazing.
That's not all, I also made Kevin Bacon, Sharon Osborne, Joe Pesci, the list goes on. I'm pretty dedicated.
So, I can call myself an artist then.

Rad people who call itself an artist probably maked some school or have an artist lifestyle , like painting all the day and an artist can do shit art or awsome art but is always artist.

Watch out for dirty panty!
